Introduction

"X-ray picture of the ground" is a typical initial impression of the detailed graphic results obtainable by radar.  Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) profiles have also been compared to the charts produced by ordinary water-depth recorders which use a sonic transducer.  However, GPR uses an electromagnetic (radio wave) antenna tuned to a frequency which can penetrate soils, rock, concrete, ice, and other common natural and manmade materials.  Such capabilities make radar a prime technique in obtaining geotechnical information and in evaluating hazardous waste sites.
